Buying a Domain
The first step to get a site ready for publishing is to purchase a domain.
Either Dotster or GoDaddy will work for our purposes and the prices are similar. You must at least register the domain for a year and that is probably the best route to go for a site we are just starting. You can always extend your registration out if you decide you want to keep the site going over time. Make sure that you setup all of your domains for ‘auto renew’ so they don’t fall into the hands of domain squatters. You don’t want your hard work to be taken away with the click of a mouse!
One other option is to search through the auction listings of domains at GoDaddy. These are domains that are expiring for whatever reason and they sell for as low as $5 each. Sometimes you can find domains that are aged and already have backlinks, which can be another beneficial ranking factor with the search engines. You have to do some due diligence when buying these domains and be sure to check the internet archive for what the domain might have been used for and also check pagerank validity and do a quick “info:domain.com” search with Google to see if any information pulls up. If nothing pulls up the domain may be ‘bad’ and you want to avoid it. If you can find an aged domain with a few backlinks that is an exact match to your keyword phrase and has a good history you should buy it without hesitation.
